The Ladies of the Lake, an active member group of the Rescue Lake Simcoe Coalition and a registered Ontario not-for-profit corporation, began in 2005 with the creation of a 2006 Ladies of the Lake Calendar that raised $250,000 to help the ailing Lake Simcoe. This connected group of over 100 women began the 2006 year by commissioning a comprehensive Naked Truth Behind the Science research report on Lake Simcoe with the Windfall Ecology Centre. Next they spearheaded five professionally-facilitated action planning events involving 300 citizens around the Lake and Watershed, and wound up the summer on October 12 by launching the Naked Truth Citizens' Action Plan to Save Lake Simcoe. More than 450 Lake Simcoe watershed residents and businesses participated in this innovative action agenda to save Lake Simcoe.
This extraordinary grass roots commotion was fuelled by the alarming findings of a scientific study which pointed to population growth and global warming as the leading risk factors for the sustainability of Lake Simcoe.
